History
KARAM Mohammed Gaber Ibrahim was born in Alexandria , Egypt on September 1, 1979
. The name KARAM means "kindly" in Arabic; his folks hoped that he would act
kindly toward others… perhaps not realizing he would one day become a
Greco-Roman wrestling champion!
Then again, perhaps a successful mat career was destined for KARAM. He was born
into a large family (five brothers, two sisters) with an active interest in
sports. KARAM was first introduced to the sport of wrestling at age 7, when his
older brother Adel took him to one of his wrestling practices. When KARAM saw
Adel in actual competition, he said, "You are so fast. I want to be like you."
KARAM officially started competing in 1989 at just 26 kg (57 lbs). He won the
Alexandria competition in his hometown, and brought home his first medal. He
then went onto the regional competition, and won silver.
All along, KARAM's wrestling career has been nurtured by his then 17-year-old
brother Adel, who not only took his younger brother to every one of his practice
sessions, but also provided much-needed equipment and financial and spiritual
support. Adel, who now lives in New York , continues to support KARAM and career
